Is Your Child Ready for Kindergarten?

Your school district will probably have their own list of things that they would like to see your child be able to achieve before entering Kindergarten. Think of this list as a basic. Ask yourself, can my child….

  • Blow his/her own nose and cover his/her own sneeze?
  • Put away her own personal belongings when asked?
  • Help clean up toys and materials from overall when asked?
  • Use a fork and spoon in an appropriate manner?
  • Be able to spread and cut a sandwich using a butter knife?
  • Is able to recognize his/her own book sack, jacket, folder, etc.?
  • Can recognize his/her name in print?
  • Can tie own shoes?
  • Washes hands using soap and water?
  • Uses toilet independently? Puts paper in toilet when finished and then flushes?
  • Can snap, button, and zipper own clothing?
  • Can draw a picture to represent a story idea?
  • Can tell or retell familiar stories?
  • Can sit for 15 minutes to listen to a story or complete a task?
  • Knows how to hold a book and turns the pages from the front to the back?
  • Will answer a question if an adult asks them?
  • Knows the words to some songs?
  • Can talk about a recent experience or event in order so that an adult can follow along?
  • Knows the names of the people in his/her family and how they relate to him/her?
  • Is able to express his/her wants, needs, and simple ideas?
  • Can follow simple directions given by an adult?
  • Can follow 2 step directions given by an adult?
  • Can follow rules?
  • Cooperates with other children without hitting, biting, or fighting?
  • Will listen to an adult and do what is asked without ignoring or defying?
  • Knows basic manner phrases and when to use them? (thank you, please, excuse me, I’m sorry).
